Hopefully, every home in America is fitted with at least one smoke detector. Smoke detectors are a crucial part of a home as they help to keep you safe. There are literally hundreds of brands that offer smoke detectors, but do any offer American made smoke detectors? Well, that’s what I’ll be looking at in this article.
Do Any Brands Sell Smoke Detectors Made in the USA (The Short Answer)
After a lot of research, I couldn’t find much regarding American made smoke detectors. I found one company that might manufacture some smoke detectors in the USA, but I couldn’t find concrete proof of this. That company is Fastenal.
American Made Smoke Detectors (What I Found)
As mentioned, I could only find a couple of companies that may produce some of their smoke detectors in the USA. Let’s take a closer look at them.
Fastenal
Fastenal is a well-known company that produces and sells a wide array of industrial and construction supplies, this includes smoke and fire detectors. It proved to be quite the challenge to find exactly where its products are made as it has facilities in countries all over the world.
The company has locations in the US, the UK, Malaysia, the Czech Republic, and more. This makes it tricky to find out which products are made where. The company does seem to have a large manufacturing center in Winona, Minnesota. However, I could find no information on which of its products are made at this facility.
One of the company’s smoke detector testers is manufactured in the USA. I doubt that this is the only smoke detector-related product that it produces in the USA, but I can’t be 100% certain.

Smoke Detectors that People Mistake as Being USA Made
One company kept popping up during my search for American made smoke detectors. However, despite several sites claiming that it is an American manufacturer, it seems to conduct its manufacturing overseas. Here’s what I found.
First Alert
Founded in 1976, First Alert is an American safety equipment company based in Aurora, Illinois. While it is based in the US, its manufacturing seems to take place in Mexico, China, and possibly other countries too.
I could find no evidence of the company producing any of its products within the US aside from a few third-party sites listing it as an American manufacturer.
So, it seems like if you buy from First Alert then you will receive a smoke detector that was made in either Mexico, China, or another country outside the US.
