Whether you are a professional painter and decorator or an amateur painter looking to give your living room an upgrade, most people have purchased paint at some point in their lives. But can you buy American made paint? Well, that’s what I’ll be checking out in this article.
Are There Any Paint Manufacturers in the USA? (The Short Answer)
After an extensive search for American paint manufacturers, I found 3 companies that offer it. The companies I found are Benjamin Moore Paint, Dunn Edwards Paints, and Heron Paint.
American Paint Manufacturers (3 You Should Check Out)
Now that we have a list of companies that offer American made paint, let’s look at each one in more detail.
Benjamin Moore Paint
Benjamin Moore Paint was founded in 1883 by Benjamin Moore and his brother. It began as a small paint company that worked out of a loft in Brooklyn, New York. Fast forward to today and the company has manufacturing facilities dotted all over the US.
According to the Benjamin Moore website, all of its paints are manufactured in the USA. The company operates facilities in Clifton, NJ, Johnstown, NY, Milford, MA, Pell City, AL, and Mesquite, TX.
The company offers more than 3,400 different color options and is able to match almost any shade out there.

Dunn Edwards Paint
Dunn Edwards Paint is a proud American manufacturer. Since the company was founded back in 1925, it has carried out the majority of its operations within the US.
According to the company’s website, Dunn Edwards paint is manufactured in the USA using both domestic and imported ingredients. You can find more information regarding its American manufacturing here.

Heron Paint
Heron Paint is a company that focuses on manufacturing linseed oil paint that is grown and made in the USA. Heron Paint produces all of its paints in small batches. This helps to reduce any unnecessary waste and allows for a higher quality finished product as each batch is given an expert level of care during the production process.
All of the company’s production is carried out at its facility in California. Heron Paint makes use of American grown linseed oil to create its paints. The company’s products are very popular due to not only the quality of the paint but also its environmentally friendly production methods.

Honorable Mentions
I came across a couple of companies that manufacture some of their paints in the US. However, they also conduct some of their manufacturing overseas. Here’s what I found.
Sherwin-Williams
Sherwin-Williams is a very well-known American paint company. It was founded in 1866 in Cleaveland, Ohio. Over its more than 150-year history, the company has built a name for itself for its high-quality paints.
As far as its manufacturing goes, it looks like Sherwin-Williams conducts its production throughout various facilities dotted around the world.
Sherwin-Williams’ corporate website states that the company operates over 130 facilities across five geographic regions.
According to the website Baltimore Sun, Sherwin-Williams operates a 23-acre facility in Southwest Baltimore that turns out 150,000 gallons of paint per day. So the company does produce a lot of paint in the US.
But, as mentioned, the US is not the only place where the company conducts its manufacturing. The website Coatings World states that the company operates manufacturing facilities in China, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Singapore.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find out which of the company’s paints is American made. Because of this, Sherwin-Williams gets an honorable mention. Here’s a link to the company’s color page for those wanting to do some investigating for themselves.
Rust-Oleum
Rust-Oleum is another well-known paint manufacturer. It was founded in Evanston, Illinois in 1921. Today, the company is a subsidiary of RPM International, Inc. But from what I could find, it looks like Rust-Oleum still manufactures its paint under the Rust-Oleum name.
As for its manufacturing locations, similar to the previous entry, Rust-Oleum operates manufacturing facilities all over the world. According to the company’s Wikipedia page, it manufactures its products in Wisconsin, Maryland, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and other locations throughout the US and Europe.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find out which of Rust-Oleums’ paints are American made. So, the company gets an honorable mention. For those wanting to take a look at the company’s paints for themselves, here’s a link to its ‘Find a product’ page.
A Question For The Readers
Initially, during my search for American paint manufacturers, I came across lots of companies. However, after investigating each one in more detail, most of them don’t clearly state where their paints are made.
