Which Brands Produce Air Conditioners in Japan? (The Short Answer)

Upon doing some research, I was able to find a handful of Japanese made AC brands. Those brands are Daikin, Panasonic, Toshiba, and Iris Ohyama.

A List of Japanese Made Air Conditioners

Now that we know some of Japan’s air conditioner brands, let’s look at each in a little more detail.

Daikin

Founded in 1924, Daikin is a Japanese multinational air conditioning manufacturing company. Akira Yamada founded the company and the headquarters is located in Osaka, Japan.

For almost 100 years, Daikin has pushed the air conditioner forward with new and innovative designs. They were the first company to sell packaged air conditioners for commercial use in Japan in 1951.

Since 1951, Daikin has created high-quality air conditioning systems for residential, industrial, and consumer use. The company has also received a lot of awards and accolades over the years too, including multiple Good Design Awards, IAUD Awards, Red Dot Design Awards, and many more. Many of their awards were for their air conditioning units.

Something else that this company can claim proudly is that they are one of the biggest air conditioning manufacturers in the world. They have sold products to over 170 different countries.

As for manufacturing, Daikin has facilities in many different countries. China, Australia, America, India, Japan, and more. But for this article, we will be focusing on the Japanese AC units.

By doing a little digging around I was able to find out that where you live plays a significant role in where your Daikin air conditioner was made. So, if you live in Japan, then it is made in Japan. If you are looking for a Daikin AC unit then you may find this link useful.

Panasonic

This company has gone by several different names over the years, but for the sake of simplicity, I’m going to refer to them by their newest name, Panasonic. Panasonic was founded in 1918 in Osaka, Japan by Konosuke Matsushita.

As most readers will know, Panasonic is a massive global company. According to their website, they operate all over the world, excluding Russia.

While most people probably think of Panasonic as a rechargeable battery producer, not a lot of people know that they also produce a wide range of high-quality air conditioning units.

Unsurprisingly, Panasonic has earned a lot of awards over the years. From Best Global Brands awards to a Ford World Excellence Safe Award and more.

Panasonic’s main headquarters is located in Osaka, Japan. But as you can probably imagine, the company has facilities all around the world.

According to various online sources, Panasonic produces its air conditioners in seven different countries, this includes Japan. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any more information than that. But at least we know that they manufacture some of their AC units in Japan.

But, if you want to purchase a Panasonic air conditioner, check the packaging as it will state where it’s made. Here’s a link to Panasonic’s consumer AC units.

Toshiba

Toshiba was founded in 1875 in Japan. It’s a major brand that is recognized all over the world. Most people know the brand due to their TV sets. But Toshiba makes a whole host of different products, including air conditioning units.

Toshiba started manufacturing AC units in 1952 in Japan. Since then, they have grown to sell AC units to people worldwide.

Toshiba has branches located in almost 40 countries, including one in Japan. There’s a Toshiba manufacturing facility in Taishi, Japan. Toshiba manufactures all of its air conditioning units in Japan and Thailand.

As for the specifics, I was unable to find out the precise models that are made in Japan. This is because it seems like an even split between Japan and Thailand for AC production. So check with the seller before making a purchase to ensure that it is a Japanese made AC unit.

As for the AC products, they manufacture everything from commercial AC units to small AC units designed for homes. Some of their consumer models include:

Iris Ohyama

Rounding off this section we have Iris Ohyama. Iris Ohyama was founded in 1971 and its headquarters is located in Sendai, Japan. The company designs and manufactures a wide range of products, this includes AC units.

The company has three main manufacturing facilities, two in China and one in Japan. Information is a little scarce for this one, as I could not gain access to their official website.

However, in case you want to have a look for yourself here is a link to some of Iris Ohyama’s AC products.

Portable Air Conditioners Made in Japan

Although there didn’t seem to be any companies that make their AC units exclusively in Japan, each company I mentioned above makes at least some of its units in Japan. So, check with the manufacturer before ordering one of the items below to ensure that it was made in Japan:

Wall Air Conditioning Units Made in Japan

Just like the section above, only this time it’s focused on Japanese wall AC units. Remember, check with the manufacturer where the unit is made before you order.
