If you landed here, chances are you’re looking for metal files made in the USA. Unfortunately, they’re not easy to find anymore as companies have shifted production overseas due to cheaper labor. I’ve done all the research to find out if there are still any American-made metal files.
Do Any Brands Sell Metal Files Made in the USA? (The Short Answer)
After doing some research, I did not find any brand that sells metal files made in the USA. I did, however, find some companies that seem to get mistaken as being American manufacturers.
Brands That Get Mistaken as Being American Manufacturers
As mentioned above, I came across a couple of companies that get mistaken for being American producers, here’s what I found.
Simonds
Simonds is a handcrafted saw and cutting tool manufacturer founded in 1832 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. By the early 1900s, the company had become one of the leading metal file manufacturers in the United States.
Although the company is still headquartered in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, it doesn’t seem like it still produces any metal files in the USA. On this Amazon listing, a customer complains that their Simonds metal file is not made in the USA, as you can see below.
It seems like Simonds metal files are now being manufactured in China, as you can see below.
I also found this eBay listing that confirms Simonds metal files are made in China.
It seems like the company also manufactures metal files in India and Honduras, as you can see below.
So, in conclusion, it seems like Simonds no longer manufactures metal files in the USA, with manufacturing now taking place in China, Honduras, and India.
Grobet
Grobet is an American precision file manufacturer founded in 1946 in Switzerland. The company soon expanded to the United States by opening a subsidiary in Brooklyn, New York.
Grobet quickly became the leader in metalworking in the USA, and in 1972, the company moved to a larger facility in Carlstadt, New Jersey, where the company is still headquartered today.
Aside from its headquarters in Carlstadt, New Jersey, Grobet has manufacturing facilities in Switzerland, Canada, and the Dominican Republic.
Cooper
Cooper is an American company founded in 1833 in New York City that initially manufactured wrought iron hardware.
Over the years, the company expanded its product line to include hand tools, and in 1968, it was acquired by the Danaher Corporation, a global conglomerate with a focus on industrial and consumer products.
Today, Cooper Hand Tools is part of the Apex Tool Group, with its headquarters in Sparks, Maryland. According to this Amazon listing, it seems like Cooper Hand Tools has a manufacturing facility in Mexico.
So, in conclusion, it doesn’t seem like metal files by Cooper are manufactured in the USA.
