Manufacturers in the United States have taken advantage of cheaper labor costs for many years now, and most products that American consumers buy these days trace their manufacturing theirorigins back to countries like China, Japan, or even Malaysia. In this article, we are going to be looking at the companies that are still known for manufacturing their dishwashers in the United States.

Which Companies Sell Dishwashers Made in the United States (The Short Answer)

After conducting some fairly in-depth research, I have found six companies that produce dishwashers and base their manufacturing operations in the United States. Those companies are: Bosch, Dacor, Frigidaire, GE Appliances, KitchenAid, and Whirlpool.

A List of American-Made Dishwashers (Six Brands to Choose From)

Let’s examine each of these companies in more detail.

Bosch

Bosch was founded in 1886 but did not establish a regional presence in the United States until two decades later, in 1906. Nevertheless, although it is headquartered in Germany, its most important dishwasher manufacturing plant is located in New Bern, North Carolina, and it is the largest dishwasher manufacturing plant in the world. The company is well known for the high quality of its products.

Bosch began its business by conducting routine mechanical work such as installing telephones and electric bells. It took nearly a century after its founding before it released its first dishwasher in 1964. Today, Bosch is a household name, recognized for a wide variety of products.

The company’s manufacturing plant in North Carolina produces almost all of Bosch’s dishwashers. However, if you want to buy only products that have been produced on American soil, you’ll want to stay away from the Benchmark line, which is produced in the company’s home country, Germany.

The SHPM88Z75N model has won reviewed.com’s “Best Dishwasher of the Year” award.

Some recommended lines include:

Bosch SHPM88Z75N

Bosch SGE53B55UC

Bosch SHPM65Z55N

Dacor

Dacor was founded in 1965 by Stanley Joseph. The company remained in his family for three generations, before being sold to Samsung relatively recently in August 2016. Unlike Bosch, Dacor is headquartered in the United States. It delivers most of its products throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Dacor focuses its business on kitchen appliances, such as ventilation hoods, microwaves, ovens, and of course, dishwashers. It has won numerous awards for its products, including four awards from the 2014 Best of Kitchen & Bath Industry Show and a placing in Better Homes & Gardens Top 30 Most Innovative Products. It also received the 2013 Good Design Award and was given the Industry Award three years in a row, from 2015-2017.

Dacor is well-known for producing high-end kitchen appliances of impeccable quality. Its products have been described as having “exceptional reliability, outstanding performance, and stunning design”. Whether or not you choose to purchase from this company, it is hard to argue with Dacor’s impressive track record.

I was only able to find one dishwasher line produced by Dacor.

Frigidaire

Originally founded as Guardian Frigerator Company in 1916, the company changed its name to Frigidaire just two years later, in 1918. That’s not the only thing that’s changed about the company since it was founded! The company was originally opened in Fort Wayne, Indiana, but its headquarters these days are in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Frigidaire has been synonymous with the refrigerators it sells for a significant part of its history–so much so that many Americans throughout much of the 1900s referred to all refrigerators as “frigidaires”, regardless of what brand they actually were.

The company has changed hands numerous times during its history. It was originally purchased by General Motors in 1918. Frigidaire was subsequently sold to the White Sewing Machine Company in 1979, which itself was purchased by Electrolux in 1986. Electrolux remains its parent company to date.

It seems the majority of Frigidaire dishwashers are produced in a plant in Kinston, North Carolina. However, there is a plant that produces a relatively small number of dishwashers in Juarez, Mexico. If you want to be certain your Frigidaire dishwasher is being produced in the United States, you’ll want to check the specific information for the line you are purchasing.

GE Appliances

GE Appliances began its history as part of General Electric in 1907, and in the following decades underwent extensive restructuring. There was an attempt to sell GE Appliances to Electrolux in 2014; this attempt failed due to a lawsuit filed by the United States Department of Justice. GE Appliances was then sold to both Haier and KKR in 2016.

The company’s headquarters are currently found in Louisville, Kentucky. Its largest manufacturing plant, which produces dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, and refrigerators, is also located in the same city. It also has manufacturing plants in LaFayette, Georgia, Decatur, Alabama, Selmer, Tennessee, and Camden, South Carolina.

GE Appliances was responsible for the creation of the first self-cleaning oven. It was also the first manufacturer to produce an over-the-range microwave. The firm’s innovation continues to this day and the company has won the Smart Appliance Company of the Year award two years in a row in 2019 and 2020.

GE Appliances offers a wide range of dishwashers made in the United States, for example:

GE PDP755SYRFS

GE GDT630PGRWW

KitchenAid

KitchenAid began its history in 1919 as a division of The Hobart Manufacturing Company responsible for producing stand mixers. The mixers it produced soon became standard across US Navy ships across the fleet. This outstanding success then led to the development and release of models for home use.

In the years since its founding, KitchenAid has expanded its business model significantly beyond mixers. The company introduced dishwashers in 1949, and today it is possible to buy a wide range of kitchen appliances from KitchenAid, including refrigerators, ranges, wall ovens, and–you guessed it–dishwashers.

There have been signs that the company is planning on expanding its business model still further. In 2016, KitchenAid announced that it would begin producing food mixes in concert with Franzese, USA Inc.

KitchenAid produces most of its appliances in various locations around the United States, including Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Mississippi, and South Carolina.

Here are some dishwasher lines produced by KitchenAid in the United States:

KitchenAid KDTM404KPS

Whirlpool

Whirlpool Corporation was founded in 1911, originally as Upton Machine Company. It wasn’t until 1949 that the company received its current name, several decades after a merger with the Nineteen Hundred Washer Company.

Whirlpool Corporation’s history to date has been rich with mergers and acquisitions. Today, the company manufactures products under a large number of brand names, including Maytag, KitchenAid, JennAir, Amana, and a host of others.

The company maintains nine manufacturing plants in the United States that I was able to find–one each in Amana, Iowa; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Cleveland, Tennessee; Clyde, Ohio; Findlay, Ohio; Greenville, Ohio; Marion, Ohio; Ottawa, Ohio; and Fall River, Massachusetts. Despite this, the sheer size of the company’s global operations means that these facilities account for only 5% of the workforce.

  1. Your information is misleading and incorrect. Anything made by Whirlpool which includes Kitchen Aide, Maytag, Kenmore and more is Chinese mfg and then some assembled in the U.S. It is huge business and I mean huge. Vast sums of money exchange hands and all people are looking for is the truth. Simple as that. Similar to a Craftsman drill claiming to be American made because it is assembled in North or South Carolina. Lies and deception should not factor into this. All many people want to know is an honest answer which clearly this info does not give. Thank you for the opportunity to voice my concerns which are factual and honest.

    • Hi William,

Thank you for your comment. Do you have any information that you can share that proves Whirlpool’s products are primarily made in China? We do acknowledge the fact that some of the companies on our list do manufacture some products in China, we then try to dig a little deeper to find which of said company’s products are American made.

If you are able to provide us with any information regarding Whirlpool’s brands being mostly Chinese manufacturers then we will happily change the article.

      Cheers, Chris.
